Present-day you meets 10-years-ago you for coffee. Share with your younger self the most challenging thing, the most rewarding thing, and the most fun thing they have to look forward to.
I don’t drink coffee so scratch that part (I have enough addictions as it is, I don’t need a caffeine addiction as well).
First bit of advice, in about three years you will get to escape this mad-house they call a school, things won’t be easier then and there will still be more than enough ignorant idiots to deal with, but by then you would have got slightly better at dealing with them. Things don’t get easier as you get older. At every major point of transition they say it will be better, from nursery to proper school, from the infants to juniors, from there to secondary school and from there to college. In the case of the last two I was assured that I would be happier and that things would be better because you are there to work then, and with college especially because people choose to be there. None of that is true, people are people wherever they are, be it work or school, children or adults, they all like to talk and socialise way too much. And the person who is too “different” or stands out too much will almost always be the target of most people’s jokes and insults. The sooner you make your peace with all of this and find a way to survive rather than trying to put things right or fit into all of this, the better.
The most challenging thing to come, I don’t know, everything that’s to come. But it’s not all doom and gloom, in the next few years your plans may not work out as you wanted them to, but friendships will be made, new special interests formed and you’ll start finding your way towards where it is you want to be. Each and every one of those interests will be rewarding in it’s own way and something can be learned from each of them.
The most fun thing, there’s a lot of fun things ahead. You’ll finally get what you wanted, someone who appreciates the details (especially in regards to films). Someone who can appreciate your fragmented mind without trying to change it.
And now the most important thing, in two years, Germany will be hosting the 2006 World Cup. Please watch all of Germany’s games and construct your schedule around them, do not just watch any game that happens to be on when you are around (you did it in 2002 for Germany and for the USA – you can do it this time as well). And this is of central importance, when you have a chance to buy a football shirt before the World Cup starts, get the Germany one, not the Brazil one. Little tip, the Brazil one is a bad idea anyway, whoever thought wearing a bright yellow football shirt under a white school shirt is an idiot (yes that’s me). The Germany one is white and the black, red and gold stripe not too noticeable, a far better choice.
I know I always say that things happen the way they do for a reason and that the order and pattern of special interests has it’s own logic and reasons, but there’s a chance here (and there’ll be another chance in 2010 and 2012 to get an early start on the time of Löw und die Mannschaft).
